The Murrell Brothers Story

Our story began in 1884, when Albert Edward Murrell and William Henry Murrell – the original Murrell Brothers – became one of the largest Tea and Coffee merchants in NSW, with offices in George St, Pitt St, Newtown, Waverly, Woollahra, Parramatta, and North Sydney.

Murrell Brothers Coffee is family run and owned, and we are passionate about bringing you sustainably run, ethically sourced, delicious coffee.

Lee and Red Murrell carried on the family ‘brothers’ tradition, travelling the world on their motorbikes, searching tastes, flavours… and experiences!

Finally, Nick and Lachie Murrell decided to bring back the old family tradition – with a new world twist. We are passionate about ethical and sustainable agricultural practices, as well as minimising waste. We love the ocean, and will do anything we can to protect it – our coffee sourcing, transportation and roasting is ethical, with the aim of minimising carbon production. . . with the added bonus of being delicious coffee.

Sustainability

Our coffee is also incredible for your garden! Heres what to do with your used coffee grounds:

Compost

Adding coffee grounds to your compost has proven to reduce the natural release of greenhouse gas emissions from compost, whilst making it richer in nutrients and of a greater quality. The grounds help to speed up the composting process. Adding this to your garden can help the soil hold more nutrients and water, increasing the health of your plants.

Fertilise Your Garden

Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and chromium – essential minerals for plant growth, and may help absorb heavy metals and contaminates in soil.

Simply sprinkle your coffee grounds onto the soil surrounding your plants – the worms love it!

Careful not to overdo it on the tomatoes – but roots such as carrots and radishes, and acid-loving plants such as hydrangeas, azaleas, blueberries and lilies love it, especially when mixed in at planting time.

Pest Repellent

The leftover caffeine in coffee grounds assist in keeping pests, such as slugs and snails away. Some say that cats are also deterred.
